[title of show] by Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell
Brevard College Theatre 2023

Theatre has become notorious for being an industry based in rejection. I consider that both realistic and a mischaracterization. Yes, our theatre-makers hear the word “no” from potential employers quite a lot. However, theatre was always meant “to hold, as ‘twere the mirror up to nature”. Human experience is vast, and there is room for all to be justly represented. So, as this play illustrates, the greatest friction comes from narrowing ourselves to fit the defining characteristics of others. When we allow ourselves to expand, and to step fully into our identity, we will find a truth in what we do as artists that will make us proud. Regardless of fame or fortune. Our four characters said it best: “I’d rather be nine people’s favorite thing, than a hundred people’s ninth favorite thing.”

This is exactly why I staged this piece “in the round”. It’s a staging that we rarely see in American Musical Theatre, but it fits [title of show] so well. It’s all about creating the best possible version of a thing with what you have. It’s a kinetic, fluid, athletic event. A flash-in-the-pan that has no bad angles. It looks best when examined closely from every possible angle. And, once again, it’s something that will only happen in this room once. The show you see will never be performed again, and the same goes for tomorrow’s performance.
