In a time when we witness the kind of Hell we are capable of inflicting on others: Be it war, kidnapping, famine, murder or the simple loss of neighborly connection, I wonder if we might find a new context for the bleak pronouncement of the play. Perhaps the Hell we design for one another is in the rejection of the other truth of this story: we are inextricably linked for the duration of our existence. How different would this play end were we to acknowledge and embrace this truth? How do we observe our own stubborn self-sufficience in the ways these three interact? Perhaps this play serves as an indictment, but it is the characters themselves who provide the condemnation.

As you watch through the wires of this cage, know that this play is a sticky one. We are all of us party to our own condemnation, but we are equally reliant on one another for our salvation. As you will hear: “We’ve all got to lose everything together, or save ourselves together. You can take your choice.”
